He served in the Civil War as a bandsman; he enlisted on Aug. 13, 1862,
from Linden, Iowa Co., Wisc., and was discharged on June 12, 1865. He
was taken prisoner on June 15, 1863, and was paroled on July 1. He l. at
Mineral Point until Oct., 1866, and then at Portage, Columbia Co., Wisc.,
where he read law during part of the time until Sept., 1870. He
practiced law at Kingston, Mo., until July, 1872. He then moved to
Stillwater, Minn., where he entered politics. In Oct., 1878, he located
in St. Paul as a lawyer.
